Multihull Magic: RORC Caribbean 600
Offshore racing in the Caribbean is a relatively new concept. In years gone by it was deemed unsafe to even sail at night in the Caribbean, let alone hurtle around in darkness in a high-performance grand prix racing machine. With the advent of modern charts and navigational aids, though (that and a good deal of courage), the attitude to overnight racing in the Caribbean has changed. In 2009, the Royal Ocean Racing Club held the first edition of the RORC Caribbean 600. Since then competitors—those in the multihull sections, in particular—have been getting faster and faster. The current race record is over 10 hours quicker than the inaugural race, roughly 30 percent faster. American teams have favored well, setting race records and winning the MOCRA Class on numerous occasions. This includes the present race record holder, Jason Carroll’s MOD70 Argo, with a team from New York’s Larchmont Yacht Club.
Not only that, the RORC Caribbean 600 has a long attracted a range of performance-cruisers in addition to record-setting cats and tris. Gunboats, HH Catamarans and a number of other designs have been part of the entry list since the race’s inception. Because the MOCRA Rule considers the size, weight and performance of each boat in computing its corrected time at the finish, they often do quite well.
Held each February, when the northeast trades are usually pumping in from the Atlantic, the RORC Caribbean 600 is a nonstop offshore race around 11 Caribbean islands starting and finishing in Antigua. With myriad maneuvers, it has been described as 12 inshore races, all strung together. After the start outside Nelson’s Dockyard Antigua, there is only one laid mark off the reef at Barbuda. The rest of the turning marks are islands, where wind shadows and acceleration zones add yet another dimension to an already complex racecourse…

Keel failure for new Farr X2
The Farr X2, the newest project by Farr Yacht Design to serve the short-handed market, had sought to be a thoroughbred race boat.
Built in Singapore by XSP, the first hull was launched in Australia in May, but while completing an overnight offshore qualifier off the coast of New South Wales on July 2, the keel attachment for this boat failed resulting in a capsize.
Named Nexba, the 9.2 metre boat was sailing into a building breeze and significant sea way at the time of the incident. The hull is now near shore… here’s the statement from the company on July 4, 2022:
——————
We are very thankful that the two crew were safely recovered and for the swift action of the Royal Australian Navy Destroyer HMAS Brisbane for rescuing the sailors in very challenging conditions.
Attempts are underway to recover the vessel to allow a thorough investigation process into the cause of this incident.
We take the safety of all the crews who sail on boats of our design very seriously and our design team is working with the builders, component suppliers and the composite structural engineers of to identify the root cause and to implement any necessary design, material or build process changes required to insure this cannot happen again.

farr from good
Shouldn’t we be at the point where this kind of thing just doesn’t happen to boats like this?
The first Farr X2 – a yacht specifically designed for two-handed offshore racing – has been lost during a shakedown sail off the Australian coast. Hull #1, named Nexba, was yesterday trying to complete the required 100nm ocean passage to qualify for the Sydney-Gold Coast race starting on July 30.
The keel either broke, or fell off, in testing conditions and the 30-footer turned turtle. The crew was rescued by a Royal Australian Navy helicopter. The keel either broke, or fell off, in testing conditions and the 30-footer turned turtle. The crew was rescued by a Royal Australian Navy helicopter. The hull – without rig or sails – has since washed up on a beach South of Sydney and the $205,000 yacht is presumably a total write-off.
Conditions in the area had been tough for the past three days with large seas and up to 30 knots of wind.
The boat carried substantial sail area, balanced by a 1,970lb bulb on a 6.7ft cast iron keel. The design also incorporates 2 x 250 litre water ballast tanks…

Ninety-one teams for ORC Double Handed Worlds
Ninety-one entries from nine nations have committed to the inaugural ORC Double Handed World Championship to start July 3 in Stockholm, Sweden. The event is part of the annual 2022 Gotland Runt, the signature offshore event fro host Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) that has attracted this year some 210 entries in addition to those racing in the double handed ORC championship.
The first challenge for the fleet will be to get out of the harbor in Stockholm and wind their way among the islands and narrow channels to get out to the Baltic Sea.
The ORC DH fleet will race on the same 358-mile clockwise course around Gotland island and back to the finish close to the KSSS base at the eastern edge of the archipelago on Sandhamn island.

Countdown to 2022 Pacific Cup
From a high point of 90 boats plus a waiting list, natural attrition, plus a few pandemic-driven issues, have pared the entry list to 63 for the 2022 Pacific Cup.
“It’s around what we expected,” says PCYC Commodore Jim Quanci. “Things happen in life and on the water. Low 60s makes for a nice comfortable crowd at both ends of the race.”
Staggered starts will be held on July 4, 5, 7, and 8 for the 2070 nm course from San Francisco, California to Kaneohe, Hawaii.
“Nice and comfortable” likely does not describe many of our participants’ preparations, as a flurry of last minute supplying and installations are taking place around the bay. Food and water (minimum ten gallons plus an emergency eleventh gallon), communications and navigation gear, and the all-important safety items must be aboard and in many cases inspected before the start.
The weather for the first week underway looks to include some interesting challenges. Areas of low wind to the north and south of the path to Hawaii may encourage entrants to thread a rather narrow path, hoping to avoid the “I wish we had gone the other way” phase of drifting and waiting for wind.
After about the 11th of July, however, the wind is expected to fill in, and even get a bit interesting as the remnants of a tropical depression rounding Baja California make themselves felt across the Pacific. Current charts suggest what ace sailor (and 2022 Newport Bermuda winning co-skipper) Sally Honey calls a “fairly benign crossing.”
Ten boats have declared for the “Fastest Family Afloat” trophy, which requires a degree of familial relationships on board. Generally this makes for a rich bonding experience. Other times, it just makes for an experience.
The family boats are Alternate Reality, Circe, City Lights, CruzSea Baby, Free Bowl of Soup, Rägeboge, Raku, Rufless, Sacagawea, and Vera Cruz.
