America’s Cup Announces Format for Women and Youth

The America’s Cup’s attempt to expand access and training opportunities for future Cup sailors is taking shape in the form of the Women’s America’s Cup and the Youth America’s Cup, to be sailed in conjunction with the main event.
Both the Women’s and Youth events will feature 12 teams split evenly into two fleets based on a nationality rule. The top three in a series of six to nine races will advance to the finals, in which the top sailors from both fleets will join for three or four more races. The top two from this series will then compete in a single-match race for victory. Perhaps a bit complicated, but race organizers seem intent on getting both fleet and match racing into the mix…

A Celebration of The Sailing Museum

After years of hard work, The Sailing Museum has now officially opened in Newport, Rhode Island. Located in Newport’s historic Armory Building, the museum offers an innovative multi-media experience for both cruisers and racers that includes the National Sailing Hall of Fame and America’s Cup Hall of Fame among its many exhibits. “Opening the museum fulfills a longstanding vision of the organization’s founders. A dream 17 years in the making,” says the museum’s executive director, Heather Ruhsam. “The Sailing Museum is not only intended to preserve the history of the sport, but educate and inspire future sailors and innovators.” For museum hours and a complete listing of exhibits, go to thesailingmuseum.org.

Multihull Magic: RORC Caribbean 600

Offshore racing in the Caribbean is a relatively new concept. In years gone by it was deemed unsafe to even sail at night in the Caribbean, let alone hurtle around in darkness in a high-performance grand prix racing machine. With the advent of modern charts and navigational aids, though (that and a good deal of courage), the attitude to overnight racing in the Caribbean has changed. In 2009, the Royal Ocean Racing Club held the first edition of the RORC Caribbean 600. Since then competitors—those in the multihull sections, in particular—have been getting faster and faster. The current race record is over 10 hours quicker than the inaugural race, roughly 30 percent faster. American teams have favored well, setting race records and winning the MOCRA Class on numerous occasions. This includes the present race record holder, Jason Carroll’s MOD70 Argo, with a team from New York’s Larchmont Yacht Club.
Not only that, the RORC Caribbean 600 has a long attracted a range of performance-cruisers in addition to record-setting cats and tris. Gunboats, HH Catamarans and a number of other designs have been part of the entry list since the race’s inception. Because the MOCRA Rule considers the size, weight and performance of each boat in computing its corrected time at the finish, they often do quite well.
Held each February, when the northeast trades are usually pumping in from the Atlantic, the RORC Caribbean 600 is a nonstop offshore race around 11 Caribbean islands starting and finishing in Antigua. With myriad maneuvers, it has been described as 12 inshore races, all strung together. After the start outside Nelson’s Dockyard Antigua, there is only one laid mark off the reef at Barbuda. The rest of the turning marks are islands, where wind shadows and acceleration zones add yet another dimension to an already complex racecourse…

farr from good
Shouldn’t we be at the point where this kind of thing just doesn’t happen to boats like this?
The first Farr X2 – a yacht specifically designed for two-handed offshore racing – has been lost during a shakedown sail off the Australian coast. Hull #1, named Nexba, was yesterday trying to complete the required 100nm ocean passage to qualify for the Sydney-Gold Coast race starting on July 30.
The keel either broke, or fell off, in testing conditions and the 30-footer turned turtle. The crew was rescued by a Royal Australian Navy helicopter. The keel either broke, or fell off, in testing conditions and the 30-footer turned turtle. The crew was rescued by a Royal Australian Navy helicopter. The hull – without rig or sails – has since washed up on a beach South of Sydney and the $205,000 yacht is presumably a total write-off.
Conditions in the area had been tough for the past three days with large seas and up to 30 knots of wind.
The boat carried substantial sail area, balanced by a 1,970lb bulb on a 6.7ft cast iron keel. The design also incorporates 2 x 250 litre water ballast tanks…

in an uncomfortable trimaran
The Royal Western Yacht Club Round Britain and Ireland race started in 1966 and was reportedly described by Robin Knox Johnston who has won it twice as one of the hardest races in Northern Europe. The race takes place every 4 years and now has 3 48 hr stopovers. Galway in Ireland, Lerwick in Shetland and Blyth in North East England. This year for the first time the race allowed both 2-handed and 4-handed entries, previously only 2-handed entries were permitted.
We entered Morpheus, a 39’ carbon trimaran designed by John and Orion Shuttleworth and launched in 2018. The boat was designed to compete in the Round Britain race but missed entry to the 2018 race by a whisker. We entered in the fully crewed (4-handed) category. Our main competitors were Hissy Fit the Dazcat 1495 50’ catamaran sailed faultlessly by Simon Baker and Dan Fellows and Pegasus the swing keel Open 50 sailed by Ross Hobson, Adrian Banks, and Chris Briggs. There were also a number of smaller multis and monos in this year’s race https://rwyc.org/the-round-britain-and-ireland-race-2022-rbi2022/
On this race, the whole of the British Isles was covered by an area of high pressure which made for challenging conditions. 90% of the race was upwind and pockmarked with wind holes for 3 out of the 4 legs…

New Multihulls for 2022
Excess 14

The latest addition to the Excess catamaran line, which now includes four models with LOAs from 37ft to 48ft, the Excess 14 carries on the tradition of cruising comfort with a dash of performance and a unique, new aesthetic. As is the case with the rest of the boats in the fleet, the Excess 14 boasts twin helms set well aft, a reverse sheer, a low-slung cabintrunk also set aft and the option of a standard rig or a higher performance “pulse” rig, which is taller with increased sail area. An A-sail can be flown from a surprisingly long fixed sprit (at least for a cruising cat) and in the three-cabin layout, the entire starboard hull is dedicated to a truly sumptuous owner’s cabin for a boat with this kind of LOA. If it’s anything like the Excess 11, in particular, expect some great performance out of this sharp new design. As is the case with the rest Excess line, the saloon windows are specifically figured to accommodate a clear view forward from the helms. And how about those sharp-looking bows!

Fountaine Pajot Aura 51

In its new 51-footer, Fountaine Pajot has sought to combine comfort with “sustainable cruising” in a sharp-looking catamaran with the company’s now trademark reverse sheer, sharp lines and tumbehome bows. As part of the “comfort” package, the Fountaine Pajot 51 has a wide-open transition between the aft cockpit and the saloon, facilitating freedom of movement between the galley and spacious cockpit that will be just the thing when at anchor, especially. With an eye torward sustainability, the boat includes sufficient surface area to mount a battery of solar panels providing an impressive 2,000 watts of “green” energy. Four different layouts are available, including a six-cabin version with a bathroom in every cabin. The boat also includes a forward lounging area and an elevated lounging area aft of the helm station. A fixed sprit forward can be used to fly an A-sail off the wind, complementing the power of the boat’s genoa and fully battened main.

No one ever said the Race to Alaska was gonna be easy…
First, most important: everyone is ok. Us, you, 100% of this year’s racers, and the brave men and women of the US Coast Guard and R2AK support vessels that affected four rescues in the Race’s first four hours. Everyone is ok.
Bruised egos, dashed dreams, but body and souls intact. Breathe in, exhale slowly. Everyone is ok…
it’s rough out there
On Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued three sailors in the Strait of Juan de Fuca after two competing sailboats capsized in rough conditions. The boats were under way in a larger flotilla for the annual Race to Alaska, and they were transiting the easternmost stretch of the strait from Port Townsend to Victoria. A gale warning and small craft advisory were in effect, and organizers described the conditions as “between seasick and dangerous” before departure. Water temperature in the strait was in the range of 50 degrees F, as is typical for the time of year. Read on.
