The MOD70 Argo has set a new provisional Antigua to Newport record of 3 days, 0 hours, 15 minutes, shaving approximately 5.5 hours off the previous mark set in 2015 by sistership Phaedo. The time becomes official when ratified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.
Departing April 6, the route began with pleasant and fast downwind conditions through the Caribbean Sea, but became progressively more difficult. Big downwind conditions east of Hatteras saw required slowing the trimaran to keep things under control. Then a fairly large and disorganized sea state made the last night of the trip one to forget, but bright sunshine and flatter seas allowed the team to send on the final day and storm into Newport just ahead of the sunset…
