How to remove “ghost lettering” on gel coat

I am changing the boat name and removed the old name with an eraser wheel. The old name is still visible and the new name does not cover it all. How do I get rid of the “ghost lettering”?I read that wet sanding is needed so I tried a test patch in an area covered by the new sticker. I thought oxidized gel coat is darker, so I am confused by the fact that the gel coat under the old sticker and what I exposed sanding is beige/ darker than the surrounding material.
