The Dutch Bridge Too Small (and Too Far) for Jeff Bezos Will Not Be Dismantled
A bridge at the center of controversy in the maritime capital of Europe — which has become a structure symbolizing the excesses of wealth — will not be temporarily dismantled to make way for Jeff Bezos’ new superyacht.
In February, Oceanco, the Dutch boatbuilder of Bezos’ beast, lobbied the city of Rotterdam, Holland, to temporarily deconstruct the middle section of the 95-year-old, decommissioned, national-heritage-landmark Koningshaven railway bridge, also known as “De ‘Hef,” to accommodate the passage of Y721, which, at 417-ft, would be one of the largest sailing yachts in the world. The New York Times said that the necessary work on the bridge would take about two days total, according to a spokesman for the city of Rotterdam.
Recently, Rotterdam city officials said that Oceanco had “informed the municipality that it is cancelling its current logistical plans,” according to the Independent, which said that employees at Oceanco “feel threatened, and the company fears it will be vandalized.”
After the proposal to dismantle De Hef became public, an event was organized to throw eggs at Y721 when it transited Rotterdam’s canals…

Scow bow trending for IMOCA 60s
Having started four Vendée Globes and finished two of them, once on the podium in third place, once after starting a second time nine days late, you would think that Jérémie Beyou had enough of this solo, non-stop round the world race. But not so.
The 46-year-old skipper from northwest France is certainly nowhere near finished with the IMOCA Class and nor with the Vendée Globe, and gets out of bed every morning driven by the goal of finally winning a race that has so far eluded him.
He has a new IMOCA Charal 2 – this time from the board of Sam Manuard with its signature scow bow – and the goal for this boat is crystal clear – win the 2024 edition.
This new IMOCA is fascinating because Beyou and his team have again built early in the cycle, but have stepped away from VPLP who they used for Charal 1 – the first of the 2020 generation of new foilers – and chosen Manuard instead…

He who dies with the most toys wins
If we were accumulating toys to win the ‘he who dies with the most’ game, having an amphibious boat would be on the list. Iguana Yachts made its first amphibian in 2011, and has just launched a new 30-foot Sport model that can hold 12 passengers and hit a top speed of 4 mph on the ground and 48 knots on the water. This video is of another model (Iguana X100) but offers a look at what is possible…
Clipper teams crossing the Atlantic
The 11 teams in the Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race completed the 700nm sprint from Bermuda to New York and departed June 29 for the 3010nm blast back towards Europe, with a stopover in Derry~Londonderry, Northern Ireland before the final finish in London, UK.
After over a week in their Atlantic Ocean crossing, the course has so far seen the teams racing fast, making the most of generous downwind conditions and tactical opportunities. During the race, the fleet can take advantage of the point maximizing virtual scoring gate and a sprint section which benefits the fastest elapsed time.
While sailing conditions have been favorable so far for the Clipper 70s, the North Atlantic can be full of surprises, making for an eventful race, potentially switching up team positions…

America’s Cup Announces Format for Women and Youth
The America’s Cup’s attempt to expand access and training opportunities for future Cup sailors is taking shape in the form of the Women’s America’s Cup and the Youth America’s Cup, to be sailed in conjunction with the main event.
Both the Women’s and Youth events will feature 12 teams split evenly into two fleets based on a nationality rule. The top three in a series of six to nine races will advance to the finals, in which the top sailors from both fleets will join for three or four more races. The top two from this series will then compete in a single-match race for victory. Perhaps a bit complicated, but race organizers seem intent on getting both fleet and match racing into the mix…

Multihull Magic: RORC Caribbean 600
Offshore racing in the Caribbean is a relatively new concept. In years gone by it was deemed unsafe to even sail at night in the Caribbean, let alone hurtle around in darkness in a high-performance grand prix racing machine. With the advent of modern charts and navigational aids, though (that and a good deal of courage), the attitude to overnight racing in the Caribbean has changed. In 2009, the Royal Ocean Racing Club held the first edition of the RORC Caribbean 600. Since then competitors—those in the multihull sections, in particular—have been getting faster and faster. The current race record is over 10 hours quicker than the inaugural race, roughly 30 percent faster. American teams have favored well, setting race records and winning the MOCRA Class on numerous occasions. This includes the present race record holder, Jason Carroll’s MOD70 Argo, with a team from New York’s Larchmont Yacht Club.
Not only that, the RORC Caribbean 600 has a long attracted a range of performance-cruisers in addition to record-setting cats and tris. Gunboats, HH Catamarans and a number of other designs have been part of the entry list since the race’s inception. Because the MOCRA Rule considers the size, weight and performance of each boat in computing its corrected time at the finish, they often do quite well.
Held each February, when the northeast trades are usually pumping in from the Atlantic, the RORC Caribbean 600 is a nonstop offshore race around 11 Caribbean islands starting and finishing in Antigua. With myriad maneuvers, it has been described as 12 inshore races, all strung together. After the start outside Nelson’s Dockyard Antigua, there is only one laid mark off the reef at Barbuda. The rest of the turning marks are islands, where wind shadows and acceleration zones add yet another dimension to an already complex racecourse…

Keel failure for new Farr X2
The Farr X2, the newest project by Farr Yacht Design to serve the short-handed market, had sought to be a thoroughbred race boat.
Built in Singapore by XSP, the first hull was launched in Australia in May, but while completing an overnight offshore qualifier off the coast of New South Wales on July 2, the keel attachment for this boat failed resulting in a capsize.
Named Nexba, the 9.2 metre boat was sailing into a building breeze and significant sea way at the time of the incident. The hull is now near shore… here’s the statement from the company on July 4, 2022:
——————
We are very thankful that the two crew were safely recovered and for the swift action of the Royal Australian Navy Destroyer HMAS Brisbane for rescuing the sailors in very challenging conditions.
Attempts are underway to recover the vessel to allow a thorough investigation process into the cause of this incident.
We take the safety of all the crews who sail on boats of our design very seriously and our design team is working with the builders, component suppliers and the composite structural engineers of to identify the root cause and to implement any necessary design, material or build process changes required to insure this cannot happen again.

farr from good
Shouldn’t we be at the point where this kind of thing just doesn’t happen to boats like this?
The first Farr X2 – a yacht specifically designed for two-handed offshore racing – has been lost during a shakedown sail off the Australian coast. Hull #1, named Nexba, was yesterday trying to complete the required 100nm ocean passage to qualify for the Sydney-Gold Coast race starting on July 30.
The keel either broke, or fell off, in testing conditions and the 30-footer turned turtle. The crew was rescued by a Royal Australian Navy helicopter. The keel either broke, or fell off, in testing conditions and the 30-footer turned turtle. The crew was rescued by a Royal Australian Navy helicopter. The hull – without rig or sails – has since washed up on a beach South of Sydney and the $205,000 yacht is presumably a total write-off.
Conditions in the area had been tough for the past three days with large seas and up to 30 knots of wind.
The boat carried substantial sail area, balanced by a 1,970lb bulb on a 6.7ft cast iron keel. The design also incorporates 2 x 250 litre water ballast tanks…
