Love and the Snipe Dinghy
At 58 years of age, noted Dutch offshore sailor Bouwe Bekking has seen a lot and done a lot yet, having taken part in eight Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Races. But when asked to choose the coolest and most innovative yacht, Bekking had a sweet spot for the 91-year old Snipe dinghy.
However, Bekking is not alone for his passion of this 15-footer as Will Apold shares:
While working a summer job in a French fry plant in between engineering semesters, I met a lovely country girl. I grew up on the Nova Scotia coast and thought that I could impress her by my sailing abilities.
So on a sunny afternoon in September, I borrowed a friend’s Snipe to take her for a sail. I thought that the Snipe would be perfect as it would just be the two of us and we would sit close to each other as we sailed along Halifax’s sheltered Bedford Basin…

Recognizing the elephant in the room
Formerly known as Whidbey Island Race Week, this Pacific Northwest regatta has been on the move since its 2019 edition. The Whidbey Island facilities were no longer sufficient, so change was needed, but then the pandemic hit. Plans made had to be remade.
After the 2020 event joined the chorus and was cancelled, the event found (another) new home for 2021 in Anacortes, WA. It was all systems go, and they did, except for a fatal accident during the June competition. Seattle sailor Greg Mueller, 58, crewing on the J/120 With Grace, fell overboard and perished.
The storied event which began in 1983 has had a rough go, but 2022 is a year to move forward, yet not without recognizing the elephant in the room… safety. Here’s a message from 2022 Race Week Anacortes to be held June 20-24:

Jimmy Spithill: Step back to step forward
After taking over the United States SailGP Team for Season 2, CEO and Driver Jimmy Spithill took them from the cellar to within grasp of the grand prize. But Spithill believed for the team to take another step forward, a step back may be necessary as he shares in this report following the Season 3 opening event in Bermuda:
It’s been awesome being back on the island, which is a second home to a lot of us after we raced the America’s Cup here a few years ago. This Bermuda Sail Grand Prix was our first time returning to a venue since we joined SailGP – and it marks a real evolution for the United States SailGP Team.
We’ve added some new faces and have a completely new shore team. Just like a pit crew in F1, those guys keep us ticking, and the importance of having the right set-up can’t be overstated – it’s the foundation to everything we do as a team, they are the first to arrive and the last to leave, and do whatever it takes to give us a shot at winning…

New Zealand To Reopen Maritime Borders Ahead of Schedule
The South Pacific will once again become an expansive cruising destination. The New Zealand government announced last week that the country’s maritime border will “reopen to currently prohibited foreign flagged vessels including cruise ships, recreational craft, and specialist vessels” from July 31, 2022. In the announcement made on May 11, New Zealand’s prime minister, Jacinta Ardern, said, ““New Zealand is in demand and now fully open for business.” The move is expected to “increase the available pool of labour, while also speeding up our tourism recovery.”
The border reopening is set for 11:59 p.m. on July 31, and the news has been received with enthusiasm, as was demonstrated in the email we received from Sharron Beck at Whangarei Marina: “Finally we can receive yachts into New Zealand again soon …”
Whangarei Marina is one of several marinas and ports that have been upgraded ahead of the reopening. As reported in Sail-World last week, “New Zealand has spent the past two years expanding superyacht offerings across the country’s marine destinations.” Whangarei has an expanded superyacht refit facility; the Bay of Islands Marina has casual berthage for visiting cruising yachts and “a new 120-metre superyacht berth.” The city of Auckland has also received additional inner city berths.
As Pacific Puddle Jumpers and cruisers cast off for, and from, the South Pacific and head for popular destinations such as the Marquesas, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Tonga and Fiji, they can soon turn south to continue on to New Zealand and enjoy the region’s spectacular sailing grounds.
