En route for the 2022 Globe40
The first edition of the Globe40 had to wait a year due to the pandemic, but this doublehanded around the world race for Class40s is set to start on June 26 from Tangier, a Moroccan port on the Strait of Gibraltar.
The race, which seeks to be both affordable and accessible on a competitive level, has 10 teams to complete the eight leg course with the final finish on March 2023 in Lorient, France. Among the field is American Joe Harris sailing his GryphonSolo2 with Roger Junet.
Having departed on May 17 from Portland, ME, they are currently crossing the Atlantic Ocean en route for the Prologue Race from Lorient to Tangier. Harris offers this update from that 3000+ nm journey:
(May 31, 2022) – I am writing on Day 13, soon to be Day 14 of this trans-Atlantic voyage that has taken many twists and turns. We are approximately 770 miles from our destination of Lorient, France but we are blocked by a wall of very strong Easterly winds that prevent us from heading east…

Eight races were completed at the 2022 J/24 US National Championship, held July 18-24 in Oak Point, TX. While the 24-boat fleet was skunked on the middle day, Texas winds did not disappoint on the bookends with consistent 15 knot breezes and gusts that averaged around 20 on both days of racing. Mike Marshall with crew Jeff Hayden, Dave Hughes, Alan Terhune, and Rod Favela won the final two races to retain the U.S National Championship title from his win in 2021. – Details

cat crazy
If there is one sailing event that always makes my heart skip a beat it’s the Worrell 1000. It has always been like that from the first time I heard about the race back when who knows when. A long time ago. I grew up sailing beach cats out of Durban, South Africa. Hobie 16’s to be exact, and I simply loved it. We were just day sailing and the thrill was at a high level.
When I heard that there was a beach cat race along the east coast of the US that went from beach to beach and involved good music and pretty women in bikinis, I was totally hooked. When I found out that it was a 1,000 mile race, well my mind was blown. A thousand miles on a beach cat and on a Hobie 16 nonetheless. What an idea and what an event it was; until it wasn’t.
I bring this up now because the Worrell 1000 is back and the most recent race finished this past weekend. There are a few things to note here. I knew Mike Worrell, well that may be a bit of a stretch, I met him a few times. He was a mild mannered man who, back in 1974, as a result of a bar bet, you know how those things go, sailed his Hobie 16 from Virginia Beach to Florida. There were only two entries; Mike and his brother. Mike and his crew Steve McGarrett were the only ones that finished. They pulled into Ft Lauderdale after 20 days. From that bar bet and very humble beginning the Worrell 1000 grew in strength until it started to attract some of the best sailors in the world…
Race to Alaska ready to roll
Race to Alaska is back for year six after a two-year COVID-induced hiatus. No motors or support allowed, the R2AK is about the physical endurance, saltwater know-how, and bulldog tenacity that it takes to navigate the 750 cold water miles from Port Townsend, Washington, to Ketchikan, Alaska. Teams embark on Stage 1, “The Proving Ground,” from Port Townsend on June 13; they have 48 hours to cross the Strait of Juan de Fuca and make it to Victoria, BC. June 16 marks the start of Stage 2, “To the Bitter End,” the 710-mile trek from Victoria to Alaska. – Full report
Eight Bells: David Forbes
Australian sailing legend David Forbes OAM (1934-2022) passed away in Sydney on May 22, 2022.
“We have lost one of the most passionate and creative yachtsmen ever born in Australia,” said Australian Sailing President Daniel Belcher. “David was a friend to many, and his loss will be felt right across the country. He achieved so much on the water in his competitive career, off the water as a designer and later in the business world.”
Forbes will be remembered by many for his Olympic gold medal win the Star Class at Munich 1972 alongside crew John Anderson OAM. It was just Australia’s second Olympic sailing gold medal, after the Barranjoey’s victory at Tokyo eight years earlier.
But there was so much more to his career, one which spanned over 20 years and included a 5.5m World Championship in 1970, a Sydney to Hobart race in 1974, and ten Australian championships in the Star (seven times), 5.5m, Soling, and Etchells classes…

Tragedy during safe boating campaign
The annual campaign, National Safe Boating Week, is a leading catalyst for recreational boating safety through education, outreach, and training. Held in 2022 on May 21 through May 27, the mission is to reduce accidents, but the messaging came too late for 68-year-old Dale Allan Hossfield from Vero Beach, FL.
The Coast Guard suspended the search for Hossfield on May 22 after it was discovered his 29-foot boat washed ashore on Melbourne Beach, FL. It was reported Hossfield left from Fort Pierce Inlet at approximately 2:00pm on May 18.
“We have made the difficult decision to suspend the search for Dale Hossfield,” said Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Delgado, Coast Guard Sector Miami search and rescue coordinator. “We extend our deepest condolences to Dale’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
Coast Guard Sector Miami watchstanders received a report on May 18 that a 29-foot boat had washed ashore on Melbourne Beach with the engines still running. After issuing an urgent marine information broadcast over VHF-FM Channel 16 notifying all mariners to keep a lookout for Hossfield, the Coast Guard launched air and surface assets to begin the search.
But after covering approximately 4,264 square miles, roughly the size of Connecticut, and searching for a total of 132 hours, their efforts were discontinued. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Hossfield should contact Coast Guard Sector Miami command center at 305-535-4472.
Closure for 2018-19 Golden Globe Race
On September 4, 2022, the third edition of the Golden Globe Race will start from Les Sables d’Olonne, France. Twenty-three sailors from 13 countries will face eight months of isolation sailing 30,000 miles across five oceans solo non-stop and unassisted.
This race, which features the type of boats and equipment from the first edition in 1968-69, will soon have closure for the second edition when Mark Sinclair (AUS) completes the course that he started with 16 others in 2018. He is expected to cross the finish line on May 27 in Les Sables d’Olonne, France.
During the 2018-19 race, Sinclair was plagued by barnacle growth which slowed his pace, and as he was running out of water, he made the decision to stop his voyage in Adelaide, South Australia after completing only half the course.
However, as there was no finishing time limit, and he only made the one-stop, he was able to re-join under the Chichester Class which was created for this sort of instance…
