Spinning the America’s Cup bottle
Defending the America’s Cup should strengthen a team’s future. All the work to host the event was done. The venue is built. The template need only be tuned, not imagined. Easy peasy.
But then Emirates Team New Zealand overplayed their hand.
As the only team at the 2017 America’s Cup that fought the low-cost plan being pitched for future events, the Kiwi victory allowed them to shape the 2021 event into a competition of extraordinary cost.
No worries, they thought, as the advantage of creating a new class boat, in this case the out-of-worldly AC75, gave them a head start on the others. Used well, more time equals more speed, and the defender used their time well…
505 love
The 50S – Part 1
The International 505. Often considered to be one of, if not THE, best dinghies ever designed. Aesthetically beautiful, fast uphill and down, no major gripes and handles sea conditions many other dinghies would struggle in. Yep, definitely the best dinghy I have ever sailed.
It does, however, have a flaw. Ironically, a flaw that this development class has, erm, developed over the years. That flaw is the cost to buy one…

Believing in a higher power
What began as a Southern California surf trip for Scott Thompson had a near tragic ending if not for the help of a seal. He tells the story:
It wasn’t a work trip. Usually when I go out to the Channel Islands, it’s to dive for sea urchin. This time it was to go surfing. Miss Grace, my 22’ Anderson boat, and those islands are not just my office. They’re my sanctuary.
There was a nice, west swell running so I looked at the weather. It looked good and I decided to go catch some waves. I called my wife and asked her if she’d mind if I went out to surf and camp on the boat for a night. She said, “Sure, do what you gotta do.”
I went down to Channel Islands Harbor, put Miss Grace in the water, fueled up, and set out at around 3:30 pm for the 21nm course across the Santa Barbara Channel towards Chinese Harbor on Santa Cruz Island…
