One of our Anarchists made the statement that this was “The worst sailboat ad of all time.” We call total bullshit on that. First, the boat is a cool little thing. Second, they are targeting a market segment that they think might like one of these. So we can all agree that this isn’t the worst sailboat ad ever (see what I did there?) So if this isn’t, what is? Jump in the thread.

Shifting role of club in America’s Cup
It is stated in the Deed of Gift that the America’s Cup is a competition between clubs, a reference repeated 17 times. But when the cost to compete exceeded what clubs could offer, control shifted to the teams, with clubs now more or less fulfilling just an entry requirement.
For Dennis Conner, after representing New York Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club, he entered the 2000 America’s Cup under Cortez Racing Association, a club with no facility which organizes local racing in San Diego, CA. Larry Ellison took it a step further, funding Golden Gate Yacht Club and filling its board with employees.
Teams now control their club’s involvement as explained by Aaron Young, Commodore of Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, holder of the America’s Cup:

The Enduring E Scow
MC devotees gathered in corn country to celebrate a half-century of the iconic scow. No wind be darned, they still found a way to have a good time. (Jen Edney/)
When Scott Harestad describes sailing MC Scows, his eyes light up with the expectation of a kid on Christmas morning. You can almost feel the exuberance. “The acceleration in the puffs is just amazing!” he says gesturing outward, his face slightly reddening with excitement and eyes widening like he’s suddenly been transported onto a wild reach on some distant lake. His speech quickens, and he shifts his weight from one foot to the other. “And,” quickly catching a breath, “you’re constantly working the controls—cunningham, vang and mainsheet—to keep it there.” Then he’s suddenly on dry land again and just as quickly asks, “Have you sailed one?”
Uh oh… it’s not shoal draft like I was told.
Return of the Annapolis Boat Show
After a hiatus in 2020, the United States Boat Show in Annapolis, Maryland returned in full force last weekend. “Pent up demand” was the name of the game for visitors and exhibitors alike. Queues to get in each morning stretched around the block, and the docks were congested with visitors even on Thursday’s “preview” day. Part of this was a symptom of some manufacturer’s limits on how many people could be onboard at a time, in combination with slightly fewer boats than past years. But even so, attendance was high and enthusiasm higher. ”I’ve never seen it like this,” said charter editor and Best Boats panelist, Zuzana Prochazka. “It’s hard to even get around to see everything.”

Murcia, Spain (October 15, 2021) – The 2021 Finn World Masters concluded today amid a difficult forecast which failed to provide the fleet with sufficient wind for one final race. After a brief hope was dashed, racing was abandoned for the day.

These three (above) were also the top three Masters for 40-49 year olds.

State of High Tide Flooding
High-tide flooding, often referred to as “nuisance” or “sunny day” flooding, is increasingly common due to years of relative sea level increases. It occurs when tides reach anywhere from 1.75 to 2 feet above the daily average high tide and start spilling onto streets or bubbling up from storm drains.
As sea level rise continues, damaging floods that decades ago happened only during a storm now happen more regularly, such as during a full-moon tide or with a change in prevailing winds or currents.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) documents changes in high-tide flooding patterns from the previous year at 97 NOAA tide gauges along the U.S. coast, and provides a flooding outlook for these locations for the coming year, as well as projections for the next several decades…

Mari-Cha III: World’s coolest yachts
Yachting World has been asking top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times, and Yachting World’s ex-editor, Elaine Bunting nominated the Maxi Ketch Mari-Cha III. Here’s the report:
Fast, shapely, elegant and still formidable on the race course, Mari-Cha III was and still is one of the world’s most impressive yachts, writes Bunting.
Created to break records, this Philippe Briand design was built in 1997 for American Bob Miller. Mari-Cha III seized the outright monohull transatlantic record in 1998, the big ketch crossing the finish line at The Lizard on 24 October 1998 in 8d 23h.
She claimed a fistful of record passages including, in 1999, the fastest ever from Sydney to Hobart. Sailing the 630-mile course in 1d 18h at a then phenomenal average of 14.75 knots, but often hitting 30 knots…
Mini Transat attacked by orcas
The 23rd edition of the Mini Transat has completed the first leg of 1350nm from France to the Canary Islands, and as the Mini 6.50 Class solo skippers prepare to start the 2700nm final leg across the Atlantic to Guadeloupe on October 29, talk of orca strikes was among the debrief.
For the past year, reports of rogue killer whales attacking boats off the coast of Spain and Portugal have made headlines, so when 90 21-footers passed along this corridor soon after the start, the odds were good that conflict would occur again.
Jay Thompson (USA), 9th in the prototype division:
“This first leg was an adventure from beginning to end. I knew there would be things that would go on during the race that would be unpredictable, but I hadn’t imagined that I’d encounter an orca and that it would make off with the lifting surface of one of my rudders after spinning the boat round 360 degrees! Was I frightened? I didn’t even have the time to be scared as it all happened very quickly.”
Felip Moll Marquez (ESP), 55th in the production division:
“I managed the start of the race well with the exception of one thing: I was attacked by orcas at night, just before the front. I think it was the second day out. They began to push my boat and play around with it. It was frightening…
