the name of the game
When the pandemic hit last year, the Lightning fleet at the Buffalo Canoe Club was displaced from their home, because the club isn’t in Buffalo, it’s located in Point Abino, Ontario. The border closed so the American members couldn’t go sail in the magical waters of Abino Bay.
A solution was found when Sandy Beach YC, which is located one mile south of Niagara Falls on the Niagara River, opened their doors to the displaced Lightning sailors and offered their club and Race Committee to the fleet. The US-Canadian border remains closed and so the scenario is being repeated this summer.
While the fleet of 11 boats is smaller by more than half than most summers at the BCC, because some boats and sailors are stuck in Canada, it remains ultra competitive. There are several World and North American and champs like David Starck and his wife, Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year Jody Starck, excellent just post-college sailors like Connor Godfrey and Katherine Moloney, along with multiple rising young sailors who get the benefit of sailing against world-class competition. Even the outstanding RC is staffed by Chair Fritz Dusel, who was a crew on a Lightning North American Championship boat, and markset Paul Grenauer who won a J22 Worlds as crew. Talent abounds everywhere on the course…

Clock ticking for next America’s Cup
by Duncan Johnstone, STUFF media
Sailors, politicians, and lawyers make up the modern mix of the America’s Cup and the three groups look to be jockeying for a way forward in a critical phase that will determine where the next regatta is destined.
It’s the final week of the negotiation phase between the government and Cup defender Team New Zealand around how Auckland can host the next version of yachting’s pinnacle event, building on what was a hugely successful 2021 regatta amid unprecedented global difficulties.
Whispers that the next government and Auckland City contributions don’t stack up won’t go away, meaning the Cup could, indeed, go away and be defended offshore.
They’ve grown so loud that now there is apparent mutiny in the air with talk of some influential members of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron weighing up a legal challenge to prevent that happening.
They appear prepared to test the rule in the centuries-old paperwork that says the Cup belongs to the challenging club, not the team – as in the RNZYS rather than Team New Zealand.
A hint of revolution amongst the evolution of sport’s oldest trophy.
Cloak and dagger drama is never far from the Auld Mug and the cone of silence that has enveloped proceedings since the Kiwis defended the Cup in mid-March has only heightened public tensions around where the next cycle will take place.
There should be no real surprise if Auckland is snubbed. It’s the preferred venue for Team New Zealand though they have been open about courting overseas offers without revealing where the alternatives may lie though the drums keep beating for Britain. – Read on

go nuclear
As I sit up here on lofty perch and watch the America’s Cup and sailing evolve, I wonder about a lot of what has gone in the name of technology, but which is really just about a paycheck. Nothing wrong with getting paid for doing things around the AC, we paid designers and builders (though not much, because they were mostly slaves, but whatevs) and sailors who took time off from their day job as fishermen. We wanted to crush the foreigners, and we did, until that hack DC didn’t cover downwind.
The boats have gotten wild since my time, though we always just wanted the fastest boat, so this foiling stuff makes sense. The Deed of Gift has served the event well, and made a couple of lawyers a lot of money in the process.
What we never contemplated was mandating a certain type of support boat. The latest announcement about hydrogen-powered foil assisted support boats is interesting in some respects. However, talking about being carbon neutral and green technology this and that….oh please, just stop. Please provide a calculation about the carbon belched into the air through the creation of all these boats and get back to us when you can demonstrate true carbon neutrality. You know, sustainable…
viva la france
Bruno Bich, the son of Baron Bic, passed away on May 30, 2021. It is an opportunity to recall what the Bic family has done for sailing in France.
For many, Bic is, above all, a brand of pens. For others, a brand of lighter. The older ones also know a brand of perfumes. The enthusiasts hear France when the name of Bic is pronounced. Read on.
Boat Review: Leopard 42
Sticking with its proven design formula, but also cherry-picking popular features from its recent models, Leopard Catamarans has launched a “best of” package with this new boat that sold nearly 30 units before hull #1 even touched water. Like a greatest hits album, the Leopard 42 combines the best of its 40ft and 50ft sailing siblings, even grabbing some of the interior styling from the Leopard 53 powercat. The result has been rolling off the production line in unprecedented numbers.
Design & Construction
Naval architects Simonis Voogd and South African builder Robertson and Caine created a boat that cruising couples as well as full charter groups will love. The construction consists of a foam-cored vacuum infusion topped by a one-piece cabinhouse—a departure from the three-section tops on the boat’s predecessors. The sailplan is a fairly simple one, with an aluminum mast and 1,256ft2 of canvas (including the square-top main). German, or bridle-style, sheeting controls the large, fully-battened Ullman main…

We see what they did here – they carry their fuselage on the top, instead of the bottom! Or are those hydrogen tanks? Outboard torpedoes? “Take that, Somalian pirates!”

vulnerable
Oceans cover 70 percent of the Earth’s surface. But, because many of us spend most of our lives on land, the 140 million square miles of blue out there aren’t always top of mind. While vast, oceans are not empty. They are teeming with life and connected to society through history and culture, shipping and economic activity, geopolitics and recreation. But oceans — along with coastal people and marine species — are vulnerable, and good ocean governance is critical to protect these expanses from pollution, overfishing and climate change, to name just some of the threats…

The New Lagoon 55
France’s Lagoon has been busy of late, recently launching its brand-new Lagoon 55, now doing a publicity tour of the Med. Replete with living space, the boat presents an unmistakable profile, sporting a hardtop that shields the flybridge and helm station from the weather and makes for a tall, triple-stacked silhouette. NautaDesign, which was responsible for the Lagoon 55’s interior, also made a point of creating as a feeling of space belowdecks as possible. To that end, extra-large windows and skylights were added to bring the outdoors in…
saved by the tug
On Friday morning, a lifesaving crew from the German Sea Rescue Society (DGzRS) worked with German police to save a historic sailing vessel from sinking in Eckernförde Bay, located on Germany’s Baltic coast north of Kiel.
At about 0925, the master of the workboat Nok 1 contacted the Bremen branch of the DGzRS over Channel 16 and reported an emergency. The Nok 1 had the traditional sailing vessel Carmelan in tow, and the vessel’s bow was sinking noticeably deeper into the water. After investigation, the workboat reported that the Carmelan was taking on water and threatening to sink.
At the time of the call, the tug and tow were about four nautical miles northwest of Kiel lighthouse. The DGzRS dispatchers alerted assets from two nearby stations, including the larger rescue vessel Fritz Knack. Read on.

Active hurricane season predicted
As the Atlantic Hurricane Season got underway June 1, storm experts at Colorado State University updated their 2021 forecast on June 3, adding an additional named storm to the prediction they issued in April 2021. Here’s the report:
Colorado State University hurricane researchers are maintaining their forecast for an above-average Atlantic hurricane season in 2021, citing the likely absence of El Niño as a primary factor. Sea surface temperatures averaged across portions of the tropical Atlantic are near normal, while the subtropical Atlantic is much warmer than average. This type of sea surface temperature configuration is also considered favorable for an active 2021 Atlantic hurricane season…

500 years or so…
Here’s some long-form video for ya.
Five centuries ago, the Age of Exploration and Europe’s imperial colonization of far-off lands was launched by a revolution in ship design that made long-distance ocean voyages practical. But exactly how this momentous innovation happened eludes historians. Now, the excavation of a rare intact wreck discovered off the coast of Sweden offers vital new clues to a maritime mystery.
