The IBM-sponsored autonomous vessel prototype Mayflower has departed the UK, bound on a transatlantic voyage to Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The AI-enabled, electric-powered vessel was developed by IBM with the non-profit ocean research organization ProMare and a partnership of scientific organizations. It was formally launched in Plymouth, England in September, and after conducting final outfitting and sea trials – and waiting out COVID-related delays and some bad weather – it is now underway.
The Mayflower measures 15 meters in length and weighs five tons, and it has a top speed of 20 knots. It is equipped with a range of scientific instruments to take measurements during its long journey, covering everything from water chemistry to microplastic pollution to whale song. Read on.

Money needed for America’s Cup defense
The escalating costs of the America’s Cup may have exceeded what New Zealand is willing to pay, leaving the Team New Zealand at a cross roads. Does the defender do what they can as a home team or shop the hosting rights abroad. Only twice before had the hosting rights been shopped, first occurring out of need when the Swiss won in 2003, and with no site within their borders meeting the Deed of Gift terms, selected Valencia, Spain. The second time was out of greed when the USA moved their second defense in 2017 from San Francisco to Bermuda.
While historically underfunded, the Kiwi team has prevailed with less, but even they may now be unable to fund a suitable effort. Having previously announced that the venue would be revealed by September and the Protocol for the 37th edition to be published by November, the clock is ticking. Has the cost of the America’s Cup exceeded what the most tenured team can afford? Here are some updates:

2021 Sunfish North American Championship
Conner Blouin won the 2021 Sunfish North American Championship held June 11-13 in Mooresville, NC. Blouin topped the 83-boat fleet in what was the largest Sunfish event in a decade, posting all top six scores through the 8-race series. The conditions on Lake Norman tested the sailors’ mettle in moderately brisk breeze and patience-straining lulls, often in the same race. Jose Hernandez nearly matched Blouin’s consistency, finishing two points off the lead in second. Completing the top five was Mike Ingham, Caterina Romero, and Eugene Schmitt. – Details

No wonder the cruise ship industry wants to get going again!
Cruise ship operations are about to return to the United States, bringing welcome relief to cruise lines and cruise-focused ports. In a sign of the return to normalcy, smugglers are once again taking advantage of legitimate cruise ship movements to piggyback small consignments of cocaine into the United States – not as large as the massive shipments that make the voyage on container ships or semi-submersibles, but still enough to warrant vigilance.
On June 6, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized 32 kilos of cocaine discovered by the security services aboard an unnamed cruise ship. The crew handed over the contraband last week upon docking in Port Everglades, Florida. Read on.

Storms shorten day at Chicago NOOD
Chicago, IL (June 12, 2021) – World-champion sailor Andy Horton, who is competing in the 2021 NOOD Regatta Chicago, said that no one on their Great Lakes 52 team believed the forecasted afternoon thunderstorm would materialize but when it did, he agreed ending racing early for the day was the right call.
“I told the Fox team that the windiest place I have ever been was during a storm in Chicago and it blew 76 knots,” he says. “Anything can happen here and do not underestimate this lake.”
All competitors completed two races before being sent to safe harbor before the worst of the storm passed…

Chicago Sailors Celebrate Return to Racing
Courageous owners Ray Douglas and Kris Maybach jumped the gun in the opening race of the Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta Chicago series, drawing an over-early penalty and forcing them to re-start behind the rest of their eight-boat J/109 fleet. They recovered quick enough to catch the fleet right before the end of the race. “Six or seven boats converged right at the finish line,” says Courageous’s spinnaker trimmer Aldo Caronia. “It was so close that the race committee declared a first-place tie between us and Slapshot II (a J/109 owned and driven by Scott Sims).
“From dead last at the start of the race to finishing with a split-first place—it’s a big win for our team,” Caronia says.
Courageous is currently in second place overall behind Smee Again, owned by George Miz, Peter Dreher and David Neenan, of Chicago. “Smee Again is definitely fast and very strong,” says Caronia, “But everything is up for grabs and it’s going to be a nice fight for tomorrow.”
Nearly 150 competitors enjoyed the first of three days of the Chicago NOOD, which is taking place across four racing circles set within sight of the Chicago skyline. Racing will continue throughout the weekend with winds expected to be light and challenging for the sailors…
