Kuka Light: World’s coolest yachts
Yachting World has been asking top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times, and four-time Olympian Mitch Booth nominated Kuka Light. Here’s the report:
“Kuka Light is the most extreme keelboat I have ever sailed,” explains Booth. “At 42 feet and built in an autoclave, she is very light and stiff. But when you look at the spec she’s special. Around 3,200kg with a beam of 4.6m and draft of 3.5m makes Comanche look very conservative by comparison!”
Booth was involved with the design from the outset, recalling that the brief from the owner was to build the fastest 40 foot monohull in the world that could take part in the premier ocean and coastal races…
It was designed by Schickler/Tagliapietra Yacht Design and drew on Booth and the owner’s own performance multihull backgrounds. The full carbon custom build frequently raced against 50-60-footers in events like the Rolex Giraglia and Middle Sea Race. With a carbon-finned canting keel, twin retractable daggerboards and a rotating mast, it was sailed by a crew of just six.
Kuka Light Stats rating:
Top speed: 34 knots
LOA: 13m/42ft
Launched: 2012
Berths: 6
Price: c.€1million
Adrenaline Factor: 90%

First-time boat buyers accounted for 34 percent of boat sales in 2021, driving growth for the recreational boating industry and further reinforcing heightened demand for boats since the outset of the pandemic. – Full report

Peter Isler: Lessons from a Record Run
World renowned sailor, educator, and 2-times America’s Cup winning navigator Peter Isler is offering a Scuttlebutt discount on his online curriculum of weather and navigation courses. But first he shares a recent experience:
I had the good fortune of getting the invite to navigate Manouch Moyashedi’s Rio100 in the 2022 Newport to Ensenada Race, a 125 nm course from Newport Beach to the finish in Ensenada, Mexico. With the start on April 22, the race has been an important fixture in the west coast offshore sailing scene for 75 years.
I’d sailed on Rio100 when it was first launched (after its transformation to a supermaxi) and did the 2014 Sydney Hobart Race on it, though for the last couple of years, I’ve been racing against it on Roy Disney’s turbo’d Volvo 70 Pyewacket70. But with Pyewacket not doing the race, I was all in.

The Clipper Round the World Race to Sail Past San Francisco
After a two-year pandemic hiatus, the Clipper Round the World Race is back underway. Having recently completed Leg 6 in Seattle, the fleet has now restarted to begin Leg 7 to Panama. The leg is expected to take 25 to 30 days, with teams expected to arrive in Panama May 25-30.

Ten of the 11 teams left Seattle on Saturday, making their way out the Strait of Juan de Fuca and around Cape Flattery to begin the long haul down the West Coast.

The 11th boat, Qingdao, having diverted to Japan for repairs earlier in Leg 6, is making progress across the North Pacific. She’s heading for San Francisco and is expected to arrive on May 5. They’ll take three to four days for a crew change before rejoining the rest of the fleet in Leg 7. Three Qingdao Leg 7 race crew, Diane Morrison from Australia, Bridget Pugh from the UK, and Qingdao Ambassador Robert Mark, were in Seattle to see the fleet depart. The trio will fly to San Francisco ahead of Qingdao’s arrival this week.
The rest of the fleet will be giving San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge a wave as they sail past.

Sitting down with Cup stakeholders
In this edition of Shirley Robertson’s Sailing Podcast, the double Olympic gold medalist Robertson sits down with several of the America’s Cup’s key stakeholders as they discuss the excitement behind the venue selection.
It’s been just over a year since Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the Cup on home waters in Auckland, and following a rigorous and in depth selection process, Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton was excited to name the Spanish city as the winning venue in a tender process that included three other significantly attractive bids.
Dalton kicks off the podcast with a discussion about the process itself, highlighting what it was about Barcelona’s bid that saw them come out on top, before inevitably discussing the complicated decision to hold the Cup away from Auckland…
Destroyer claims 2022 Yachting Cup
Jim Bailey’s ID35 Destroyer was selected as overall winner of the 50th Yachting Cup held April 29-May 1 in San Diego, CA. This was Destroyer’s first time on the water since a total refit, with Bailey and his crew handling the PHRF-3 Class in its debut.
“We came into this regatta without a lot of expectations because we just got the boat on the water. This is Destroyer’s first regatta,” noted Bailey whose crew included his three sons – Charlie, Danny, and William.
“I listen to our crew. My biggest challenge is sailing in chop and breeze. I don’t do it enough, my crew keeps reminding me.”
Luckily for Bailey’s crew, they will be getting much more practice soon. New ID35s are making their way to Southern California, so Bailey and the current ID35 owners can expect more competition in the fleet. Between Marina del Rey and San Diego, 12 new boats are on the horizon…

holy jesus
While on a passage from Casais, Portugal back to their base in Gosport (UK) the amazing Infiniti 52, Tulikettu hit an Unidentified Floating Object (UFO). This happened on April 18th with the EPIRB activated just after midnight on the 20th which suggests that initially it was hoped to limp the boat to safety.
Ten hours later the delivery crew of 4 was rescued by a tanker that had diverted to assist.
For the last 7 days a salvage tug supported by a spotter plane has searched the area to no avail so it must be assumed that the virtually brand new boat has been lost at sea.
A shame when any yacht is lost in this manner but this boat fitted with Hugh Welbourn’s revolutionary DSS foil had already shown so much promise in its short life…

it takes two to tango
The sometimes acrimonious dispute in Australia over the eligibility of two-handed offshore racing yachts using autopilots has reached a significant turning point.
SA readers will remember that after a two-handed division was established for the 2020 Sydney-Hobart Race pressure from some influential skippers of conventionally crewed yachts saw the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia amend its Notice of Race to exclude the two-handers from the overall and existing divisional prizes…

much ado about andoo
The fog of uncertainty around the fate of the supermaxi formerly known as Comanche is clearing – somewhat.
This much we know: the 100-footer has been chartered, with an option to buy, from “someone in Singapore” by Sydney businessman John ‘Herman’ Winning. (He is known by that nickname to differentiate from his father, also named John Winning, who is also a dedicated racing sailor.)
The fact that no one seems able, as yet, to confirm the identity of the Singaporean owner is a trifle mysterious. It certainly would appear to be a convenient arrangement in relation to the recent ban by World Sailing on any boat with Russian connections. But maybe that’s just a coincidence.
Phone camera snaps from the Caribbean indicate that the boat’s name has already been changed from Comanche to Andoo. Andoo? Well, Andoo is the name of the Down Under business founded and run by ‘Herman’ Winning. It advertises itself as “The home of feel-good living” and sells furniture, homewares and appliances. He also races an 18-foot skiff under that name…
