Para Kiteboarding delivers the sizzle

With Alpine Skiing and Snowboard events at the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, solutions exist for disabled athletes to compete. As World Sailing seeks for its sport to be re-introduced to the Paralympic Summer Games, the international federation is learning that kiteboarding can provide the sizzle.

To increase the growth of Para Sailing globally, World Sailing held its first ever Para Kiteboarding Development Program, gathering 11 coaches and athletes from seven countries for four days on Lake Garda, Italy.

Top athletes and coaches from Australia, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Netherlands and USA convened on June 23-26 for on-water and classroom sessions to build out an international competition and growth framework for Para Kiteboarding.

“It’s been intense – we’ve been on the water from 7am, then back in the classroom, hammering out frameworks for what Para Kiteboarding could look like on a global, organized scale,” explained Florida-based Frances Osorio Rivera, 34, a US Army veteran, below the left leg amputee, kiteboarding instructor, and Cabrinha/Dakine sponsored athlete and sales representative.

Willem Hooft, the 32-year-old athlete representative from Netherlands, had a motorbike accident five years ago which left him in a wheelchair. “Despite regularly hearing that my plans to kiteboard were not realistic – too difficult to learn and the risks too big for someone in a wheelchair – I decided to go for it,” shared Hooft…

Morphing youth sailors into adult sailors

Tuesday

Posted by XS Editor

Dawn Nelson shares this case study of one skipper and four youth sailors, and how their combined efforts on a Texas lake has contributed to the future of the sport.

The 41st Annual Dallas Race Week took place June 20-24 on Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall, Texas. The charity regatta, organized by Billy Self, is a continuation of the event created by his father, Scott Self.

After Scott skippered a local team from Chandlers Landing Yacht Club (Rockwall, TX) in the 1978 Antigua Race Week, he modeled the inaugural Dallas Race Week in 1982 to replicate the fun his team had in Antigua; Scott participated in every Dallas Race Week until his passing in June 2020.

The regatta, which is always held during the week of Father’s Day, has been modified to fit the Texas weather (100°+F days necessitate evening starts) and work schedules with one race, starting at 7:00 p.m. each night, in a Monday-Friday format.

The race is followed by a post-race party every evening, hosted by the Chandlers Landing Marina and the Yacht Club. It’s no surprise that Billy Self was an excellent youth sailor who continues to participate in the local racing scene as an adult…

The first edition of the Globe40 got underway June 26 in the Bay of Tangier, with the seven doublehanded teams setting off on the round the world race for Class40 yachts from this Moroccan port.

Before leaving the Strait of Gibraltar, the competitors completed a 7-mile coastal course in sunshine and a W/NW’ly breeze of around fifteen knots. The fleet than commences with the first of eight legs, starting with the 1,740 mile course to Cape Verde.

An early accident involved the Canadian team of Mélodie Schaffer and Gary Jacques on Whiskey Jack which crossed tacks with the French Team The Globe en Solidaire, with the latter forced to return to port to repair a damaged bowsprit before returning to the race…

R2AK: Will monohulls sweep the podium?

Wednesday
Jun 22
2022
Posted by XS Editor

After the race was cancelled in 2020 and 2021, the 6th edition of the 750 mile Race to Alaska (R2AK) began June 13 with a 40-mile “proving stage” from Port Townsend, WA to Victoria, BC. For those that survived, they started the remaining 710 miles on June 16 to Ketchikan, AK. Here’s the day six report:

The bookies over at the Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce are divvying up the cash stakes everyone laid on the off chance they would be the ones to precisely predict the arrival time of first place. The total winnings are undisclosed, but we’re betting it’s not paid in candy corn, and it will make at least 1.5 dreams come true.

Also, true to form, 10,000 dollars of highly suspect bills were nailed to the wall of the Alaska Fish House last night, with the simple dare to the crew of Team Pure and Wild. “If you sailed here to get it, then get it.”

This is also the exact moment Tracker Acolytes global-wide take a quick beat and proclaim another R2AK decided and done. However, if you spent more than a thumb-scrolling minute with us, you’re reaching for the third bag of Jiffy Pop, checking the anchor or mood lighting or poorly fluffed pillow, and waiting for the stories to play out…

US SailGP: Results are the true reflection

Wednesday
Jun 22
2022
Posted by XS Editor

After finishing eighth of nine teams, United States SailGP Team skipper Jimmy Spithill looks back at the challenging Sail Grand Prix in Chicago on June 18-19 and insists the team will make the most out of the tough moments.

One of the best things about sport is that it humbles you, you are never safe – and at the top level, things can change at any time.

There is no short-cutting or lying to yourself on how you are going: results are the true reflection.

When you have a good day out on the race course, there’s no better feeling in the world – but when it goes badly, there is no hiding. You have to look in the mirror, be honest with yourself, and find a way to use the tough moments or bad results as learning opportunities…

in an uncomfortable trimaran

Tuesday
Jun 21
2022
Posted by deleteme

The Royal Western Yacht Club Round Britain and Ireland race started in 1966 and was reportedly described by Robin Knox Johnston who has won it twice as one of the hardest races in Northern Europe. The race takes place every 4 years and now has 3 48 hr stopovers. Galway in Ireland, Lerwick in Shetland and Blyth in North East England.  This year for the first time the race allowed both 2-handed and 4-handed entries, previously only 2-handed entries were permitted.

We entered Morpheus, a 39’ carbon trimaran designed by John and Orion Shuttleworth and launched in 2018. The boat was designed to compete in the Round Britain race but missed entry to the 2018 race by a whisker. We entered in the fully crewed (4-handed) category. Our main competitors were Hissy Fit the Dazcat 1495 50’ catamaran sailed faultlessly by Simon Baker and Dan Fellows and Pegasus the swing keel Open 50 sailed by Ross Hobson, Adrian Banks, and Chris Briggs. There were also a number of smaller multis and monos in this year’s race https://rwyc.org/the-round-britain-and-ireland-race-2022-rbi2022/

On this race, the whole of the British Isles was covered by an area of high pressure which made for challenging conditions. 90% of the race was upwind and pockmarked with wind holes for 3 out of the 4 legs…
