Tequila shots and huevos rancheros

The 2022 San Diego to Vallarta International Yacht Race divided the 30 entrants among three start dates on March 10-12 for the 1050 nm course. Here’s the update from March 16, 2022:

While the fleet worked their way toward Puerto Vallarta, the shore team made their grocery store runs and rested up in preparation for the arrivals. That shift from siestas to tequila shots began yesterday at sunset when the modified Volvo 70 Pyewacket 70 arrived.

With their finish at the entrance to Banderas Bay, Roy P. Disney and the crew of Pyewacket 70 set a new monohull record for the course of 3:04:38:02. Disney’s team bested the Bakewell White 100 Rio100’s 2016 mark by one hour and 4 minutes. Less than an hour later, Rio100 also beat their 2016 time by about 25 minutes.

The next finishers came just after midnight and it has been non-stop huevos rancheros through the day. All seven boats in ORR-1 are now on barstools with Tom Holthus’ Botin 56 BadPak as the class winner, but sitting second overall to the lone ORR-2 entry on terra firma – John Raymont’s Ker 51 Fast Exit II…

It may not be very common to see women accepting – or having the opportunity to accept – challenges such as that of sailing single-handed around the world non-stop, but more and more are following in the footsteps of some brave female sailors who broke all sorts of barriers.

Ocean sailing accounts for many great sailors who for one reason or another have earned a place in history. However, it is striking how few female seafarers embark on such great adventures and, in most cases, their little visibility.

It does not take much research to find many female sailors who have left their mark in ocean sailing. United Kingdom and France have been the birthplace of the first female pioneers in offshore racing.

If we look for the reasons why only a small number of women, compared to men, have ventured to face the challenge of the oceans we can think of the obvious cultural reasons, seafarers were once exclusively men. The first woman to have circumnavigated of the world was Jeanne Baret from France in 1767 although, in her case, she embarked disguised as a man to be part of an all-men crew…

the wheels on the bus go round and…

The recent media announcement and accompanying video by Team New Zealand that their design and build teams are constructing a wheeled, wing-driven vehicle to challenge the world sailing land speed record has provoked immediate responses from the other America’s Cup syndicates.

A spokesman for INEOS, the Challenger of Record for AC37, was far from impressed. “It looks to us like the Kiwis have been sitting around twiddling their thumbs”, he said. “They’ve now dreamed this up to spend some leftover government grant money while waiting for sponsorship and a decision on a venue for 2024. We’re way ahead of them on our own side project.

“We call it the ‘Four Fs’ for short. It stands for Future Full-Foil Fracking. We’ve taken the advanced foiling technology from the America’s Cup and adapted it for energy mining applications. Early indications are that the foils destroy natural geology at a wonderful rate. The marketing people have already come up with a nifty slogan: ‘Cutting edge for cutting rock’. Sir James is delighted.”

Not to be outdone, the innovators at the Prada Luna Rossa syndicate have also been working on an exciting project that exploits the enhanced levels of expertise they developed during their 2021 America’s Cup campaign. Details are still sketchy (and protected by patent applications) but it seems certain the breakthrough is related to the production of certain forms of pasta…

On Course, Episode 17

Wednesday
Mar 16

Posted by XS Editor

The On Course series takes a regular look at the sailing world with show host Matt Sheahan:

There is a serious need for speed out there right now. From state of the art super sleek foiling Moths that will go upwind at 20 knots, to ice yachts that will hit 80 mph and more – both of which we cover in this episode.

But what’s really grabbed our attention recently are three fascinating record breaking campaigns. Two are focused on the outright sailing speed record that look to flight as a large part of the answer. And yet the very team you might have thought was up for a record breaking blast along a 500 m course is actually having a crack at being the fastest on dry land.

Emirates Team New Zealand might have led the foiling agenda for over a decade and have two consecutive America’s Cup wins to prove it, but they now want to set a speed record on land. We find out why…and how…

Sea of Cortez sprint to Puerto Vallarta

The 2022 San Diego to Vallarta International Yacht Race divided the 30 entrants among three start dates on March 10-12 for the 1050 nm course. Here’s the update from March 15, 2022:

As the sun came up today on the 2022 Puerto Vallarta race track, the YB tracker reveals some great stuff. If the Windy.com weather overlay is to be believed, a little river of green with white lines is flowing south out of the Sea of Cortez. That is money! First, the more ‘northerly’ direction the wind, the better for sailors reaching to the east on a port gybe. Second, the green-ish tint indicates wind strength of 10-ish knots.

The wind strength key is across the bottom of the screen, and while it is not a vibrant green (high teens), it is not covered in the dreaded ‘blue bayou’ that indicates wind of 5 kts or less. While the morning 0800 roll calls are reporting a few lulls in the ‘green’ winds, expectations are for the daily thermals to develop and help the fleet stay compressed and on a fast track to the finish…

On a mission to simplify Mark-Room rule

Tuesday
Mar 15
2022
Posted by XS Editor

Dave Perry, as the chair of a World Sailing Racing Rules Committee working party, is on a mission to simplify Rule 18 (Mark-Room). But he needs help… here’s his pitch:

Without a doubt, the most complicated rule in the rule book is Rule 18, Mark-Room. It is the rule that applies when boats are rounding or passing marks. The World Sailing Racing Rules Committee has commissioned a Rule 18 Working Party made up of international sailors and rules experts to try and find ways to simplify Rule 18 without significantly changing the way the game is currently being played.

We are now looking for fleets who would be willing to test a new Rule 18 between May 1 and July 15, 2022. The test would include a packet with the test rule and supporting information, a Zoom session with a member of the Rule 18 WP for all the participants before the testing began, and a follow-up Zoom session at the end of the test period for the participants to share their experiences, thoughts and suggestions.

Any fleets, clubs, sailing organizations or classes, etc. willing to help the Rule 18 WP by testing a new rule 18, please contact me at davperry@optonline.net.

For a refresher on how Rule 18 is currently written in the 2021-2024 Racing Rules of Sailing, click here.

Likely the biggest abortion of a sailing yacht ever is the disgusting-looking pig of a “boat”, S/Y A has been seized.

The “Sy A” embarrassment worth about 530 million euros attributable to the Russian oligarch Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko was subjected to a freezing order by the Financial Police as part of the measures taken against Russian tycoons included in the “black list »of the European Union .

According to what is learned, the boat was in storage in the port of Trieste . The Sy A is considered the largest sailing yacht in the world: she measures 142 meters in length, she was designed by Philippe Starck and was launched in 2015…

Andoo seals victory at 2022 JJ Giltinan

In the absence of an official world championship, the JJ Giltinan Championship is the highest honor for the 18-foot skiff class. The 2022 edition on March 5-13 brings together 25 teams on Sydney Harbor to make their mark in the 84-year history of the world’s premier 18-Footer championship.

Sydney, Australia (March 13, 2022) – The Andoo team of Seve Jarvin, Matt Stenta, and Sam Newton officially became the 2022 JJ Giltinan 18ft Skiff champion, although it was in an unbeatable position before going into today’s final race of the championship on Sydney Harbour.

Andoo’s victory gave Jarvin his ninth win, eight as a skipper, in the world’s most valued 18ft skiff championship. For bowman Newton, it was his seventh title but the first for sheet hand Matt Stenta, who joined the team this season…

Keelhaulers in charge at Harbor Cup

San Pedro, CA (March 12, 2022) – Conditions went from bucolic to blustery today at the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup – California Maritime Academy Invitational Intercollegiate Regatta. After eight races in the Catalina 37s, defending champion California Maritime Academy clung to the top of the leaderboard, with the US Naval Academy close astern.

The Navy Midshipmen and Cal Maritime Keelhaulers have a long-standing rivalry. They are the only teams to have competed in every edition of the Harbor Cup, and both have tasted victory. But today, as winds topped 18-knots, they carried their battles from the racecourse to the protest room, leading to a DSQ in Race Seven for the Mids.

Winds pressed today just shy of the top limit of the Catalina 37 fleet, with their fixed sail inventory, but the Race Committee was able to pull off four races…

Final start for San Diego Vallarta Race

Sunday
Mar 13
2022
Posted by XS Editor

San Diego, CA (March 12, 2022) – The final wave of starters for the 2022 San Diego to Vallarta International Yacht Race featured Class 1 and 2 boats with veteran ocean racers like Roy P. Disney’s modified Volvo 70 Pyewacket 70, Manouch Moshayedi’s Bakewell White design Rio100 (monohull course record-holder), and Doug Baker’s Dencho/Kernan 68 Peligroso.

This year stands as Peligroso’s ninth consecutive PV Race dating back to 2006, and includes 3x 1st in Class and 2x 1st Overall. Class 2 is composed of classics like the Santa Cruz 70s including Marchetta / Furey’s Mirage and Jack Jennings’ Pied Piper.

As for those already on the 1050 nm course, if yesterday’s summary word-of-the race was “angles,” today’s words are “VMC” or “Velocity Made on Course.”

Watching the Class 6 boats beat their way out of San Diego Bay in a southerly wind was a tough way to start a distance race. At 0800 Roll Call today, they were generally passing San Carlos/Turtle Bay. By contrast, the Class 3, 4, and 5 boats got a nice westerly breeze at the start that built through the evening and allowed them to fast reach directly toward the finish.

Despite starting a day later, their 0800 boat positions today are less than 100 nm astern, about parallel to Guadalupe Island. Watching the YB Tracker, you can see the dramatic difference in course choices. By 0400 or 0500, the day two starters opted to gybe back toward the Baja coast and stay closer to the rhumbline, the most direct course to the finish…

Second wave for San Diego Vallarta Race

Saturday
Mar 12
2022
Posted by XS Editor

San Diego, CA (March 11, 2022) – The second wave of starters for the 2022 San Diego to Vallarta International Yacht Race launched Divisions 3, 4, and 5 in westerly wind of 5-8 knots that allowed reaching angles for the start of their 1000 nm course.

Among the starters was Ivan Batanov’s Soto 40 Zero Gravity who anticipates a challenging race due to somewhat unpredictable weather conditions. “Some years it can be very light, others can get a bit sporty,” noted Batanov. “The rounding of Cabo is critical and can make or break the race. Depending on the local conditions and the time of day, many boats have lost hours and days in the light airs ‘hole of Cabo’. For us, the 1000 mile course requires careful planning to keep the boat light and fast.”

For the three boats that started yesterday, their email check-in this morning had the Division 6 boats 120-135 nm down the track. White Cloud and Envolee were within a half mile of each other having morning coffee (or their equivalent). Such Fast stands only a few miles behind the other two in terms of distance to finish, but in a more offshore position. Clearly different pages from the Mexico Race play book…

Dean Barker: So often the nearly man

When America’s Cup challenger American Magic revealed its core sailing team for the 37th America’s Cup, the news was as much about the omissions as it was the line-up for the USA team.

While no specific roles were defined, the absence of skipper Terry Hutchinson among the roster may indicate a transition off the boat for the 53 year old. But also missing was Dean Barker who was on the helm for the team’s first campaign in 2021.

Hutchinson and Barker are longtime teammates from the Team New Zealand challenge in the 2007 America’s Cup, but the litany of race course errors during the 36th America’s Cup cast doubt on Barker’s future. In this report by Duncan Johnstone, he details Barker’s journey for STUFF media:
