omicron the wrecker

The Sydney-Hobart Race is a genuine offshore passage race. But a rapid resurgence of Covid in Australia may turn that aspect of the event into a disruptive nightmare.

The race starts in mainland New South Wales and ends 628 nautical miles away on the island of Tasmania. But here’s the catch: the separate states of the Australian Commonwealth each set their own health protocols.

Last year’s race was abandoned a week before the December 26 start, principally because the Tasmanian government and health authorities were concerned that arriving crew and supporters would bring the virus with them. Many other states also closed their borders for long periods.

Now, with just four days to go before the starting canon is scheduled to fire at 13:00 on Boxing Day, genuine fears are emerging that the fast-multiplying Omicron strain will hamstring the race, if not force its cancellation altogether. NSW recorded more than 3,700 new infections yesterday while Tasmania had 12 after recently re-opening their borders…

Jimmy Spithill: Achieving the objective

Wednesday

The second season of SailGP has eight events to decide which of the eight teams will claim the top three spots that advance to the final $1 million winner-takes-all race.

But before the eighth event in San Francisco on March 26-27, the consistency of Australia and United States have guaranteed their entry into the finale. The USA event will now decide who joins them for the money race on that last day.

USA skipper Jimmy Spithill reflects on the journey in this report for sponsor Red Bull:

We hit a top speed of 53.1 knots (0.1 knots short of the speed record!) in big breeze on Sydney Harbor, but that wasn’t even the highlight of the Australia Sail Grand Prix for us…

America’s Cup: Reading the tea leaves

Tuesday
Dec 21

Posted by XS Editor

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are the Batman and Robin of New Zealand. Their combined efforts have won a pile of World titles, two Olympic medals, and two America’s Cups. Together they’ve been recipients of the Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award.

It would almost seem unfathomable that two key cogs of New Zealand’s America’s Cup machine to not be critical members of their next defense, yet they have not signed with the Kiwi team. Despite nationality rules in place for the 2024 event which limit their options to help other teams, their hesitancy to commit may have nothing to do with sailing.

This dynamic duo founded marine conservation charity Live Ocean to help safeguard the oceans and raise awareness of their importance to the health of the planet. Such a righteous goal requires righteous partners, and the possibility of the America’s Cup team management accepting Saudi Arabian support to host the event in Jeddah might be more than they can stomach.

With a home defense seemingly unlikely due to funding needs, the offshore options have been revealed to be Ireland, Spain, and Saudi Arabia, with Burling and Tuke having expressed reservations about the prospect of the Cup being held in Jeddah.

Clearly, an America’s Cup fed on oil money in a country with questionable human rights issues, wouldn’t sit comfortably with the conservation work which is a real passion for them now.

Depending on how you read the tea leaves, the signing by Team New Zealand of Australian helmsman Nathan Outteridge says the duo has one foot out the door if Jeddah is the leading contender, while chief operations officer Kevin Shoebridge says they want to keep Burling and Tuke in their afterguard…

Sydney, Australia – SailGP supremo Larry Ellison has announced major changes to the format of the event following the two-day series just concluded in Sydney. The new rules apply immediately and are the conditions under which the final round will be sailed in San Francisco on March 26-27.

Speaking to the media before boarding his “Powered by Nature” private jet for the flight back to the US, Ellison conceded that the radical changes to the SailGP format were a response to general disappointment with the series so far.

“The same few boats win all the races”, he said “and no matter which country they’re supposed to be representing they’re all sailed by Australians anyway. The only exciting moment was when the UK boat smashed into Japan and ripped the bow off one hull. TV replayed that 37 times from six different angles.”

But that incident sparked an idea in Ellison’s ever-fertile mind. “It was my ‘Eureka!’ moment – like Archimedes in the bath. If a collision is the only thing to get people interested in the event, then why not make it all collisions? Let’s have an old-fashioned Demolition Derby on water at 35 knots!”…

First Boat for Child

Looking for advice on the best first boat for a child. She will be 5 this year and starting to think ahead a bit and have something that I can somewhat fit on with her this summer and probably next before she starts doing it on her own. My thoughts are an Opti or a sunfish. I also saw a Minifish for sale. No lakes around us have fleets for either of these two. Any thoughts on these or other boats that would be good? We sail as a family on a Catalina 25 so dinghy sailing is a pretty a…

Toronto, ON (December 17, 2021) – Organizers of the Toronto International Boat Show (TIBS) have announced that the annual event, scheduled to be held in-person, has cancelled for 2022. The rapidly developing Omicron variant and newly mandated capacity limitations at large events in Ontario meant that the in-person show could not move forward as planned on January 22-30.

As North America’s Largest Indoor Boat Show, the event was set to showcase more than 300 exhibitors, plus 250 seminars and workshops inside the Enercare Centre at Exhibition Place. A new initiative for the show was the launch of a 5000 square foot Boater’s Resource Centre, featuring 15 industry and government organizations…

Pile-up at Australia Sail Grand Prix

Friday

Posted by XS Editor

Sydney, Australia (December 17, 2021) – Under perfect skies it was anything but a perfect day of racing for Great Britain and Japan as a major crash happened moments before the start of race three, turning the Australia Sail Grand Prix and the season on its head.

The dramatic collision between Sir Ben Ainslie’s Great Britain SailGP Team and Nathan Outteridge’s Japan team stunned spectators and competitors alike, and left both boats extensively damaged and unable to start the day’s final race.

The crash occurred just minutes after Japan had seemingly taken command of the Sydney event with a win in race two, and it left Ainslie and his team ruled out of the rest of the event and with their chances of qualifying for the Season 2 Grand Final in San Francisco in tatters. All crew members on both boats were safe and unharmed after the incident and all debris was collected out of the water…

dream on

Not everyone hangs onto a dream with unrelenting tenacity. In 2011, Bodacious Dream, a Farr-designed Class 40, was commissioned as Dave Rearick’s singlehanded entry in the Global Oceans Race–A dream Dave held for forty years.

When organizers canceled the race, Dave’s sponsors encouraged him to continue. On October 2nd, 2013, Bodacious Dream left Jamestown, RI, with its 55-year-old skipper to circumnavigate the world. Dave’s book, Spirit of a Dream, is an invitation to join the journey, not just as a reader, but intimately onboard with his thoughts and experiences as he sails the traditional race route–Alone.

Released from the pressures of the Race, Dave is free to pursue his thoughts and connections with the powerful essence of the Sea. As quoted by one reader, “Spirit of a Dream is as good a read as any book written by the great sailors. I tried to savor it like fine wine but read it in one sitting. It was worth it.”

Halyard wrap – less than full hoist job

Halyard wrap
This may be a bit difficult to describe in words and I may not succeed.I think I understand halyard wrap under “normal” configurations pretty well. The boat has a Profurl furling system and there is an anti-wrap device at the top. With a full hoist sail I have no concerns.

However I have a less than full hoist jib I don’t have a lot of experience with. So far I have only flown it hauled all the way up engaging the Profurl anti-wrap device with a lanyard on the toe. This…

Geneva, Switzerland (December 14, 2021) – The double America’s Cup–winning syndicate Alinghi made it official today they are once again in pursuit of the oldest trophy in international sport.

Alinghi founder Ernesto Bertarelli and two-time Olympic champion Hans Peter Steinacher announced the launch of the new Alinghi Red Bull Racing and presented its logo at the Société Nautique de Genève, the yacht club the team will represent.

After an absence of over a decade, Alinghi is returning to battle for sailing’s pinnacle honor, and this time has partnered with a driving force in global sport, forming Alinghi Red Bull Racing to prepare for racing as an official challenger when the Selection Series for the 37th America’s Cup begins in 2024.

“While keeping the winning spirit that has always animated Alinghi, we want for this challenge to do something totally different, totally new, totally fresh,” said Bertarelli as he aligns with Austrian billionaire businessman Dietrich Mateschitz, the co-founder and 49% owner of the Red Bull energy drink company…
