Kiwi battle over America’s Cup venue
While it is not a requirement for the America’s Cup defender to host the event in their home waters, it is expected. The habit has only twice been broken – once when home waters were insufficient and once because of greed.
But for Team New Zealand, which seeks the unprecedented achievement to win the America’s Cup three times in a row, they are pondering this unthinkable action for a third reason – necessity. Here’s an update from Duncan Johnstone of STUFF media:
Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron commodore Aaron Young has warned of the potentially “dire consequences”, including forfeiting the Auld Mug, if an under-funded Team New Zealand are forced to try to defend the America’s Cup in Auckland…

11th Hour Breakdown in the TJV
11th Hour Racing’s Mālama kicked off the second week of the Transat Jaques Vabre with keel problems, forcing co-skippers Charlie Enright and Pascal Bidégorry to adjust for a more conservative approach to the race’s remaining 2000 miles.
“We’ve been dealing with a lot of breakages throughout the course of this race, such is the nature of a new boat on an action packed and competitive track like this one,” said Enright. “None of these ‘little incidents’ compares to what we went through yesterday. While reaching along in what I will refer to as a typical doldrums squall, we hit 28 knots of boat speed with the J2 and a full main. Shortly thereafter, the boat essentially tripped over itself and we were no longer able to achieve speed. Assuming we’d caught something, we proceeded to try and ‘broach’ it off the keel. When that didn’t work, we backed down … and then backed down again. I took a look in the endoscope and saw what I thought was a line.”
Rekindling a great Texas tradition
It’s not the largest of the fifty United States, in neither population nor area, but Texas is plenty big. So big that there are 15 states that could fit within Texas simultaneously. So big the entire world population could fit into the state. So big that if Texas were its own country, it would be bigger than every country in Europe.
So yes, it’s plenty big, which makes the Texas Challenge Cup something to behold. This invitational event hosts teams from active sailing and yacht clubs in Texas, one team per club, with 3-4 sailors each, to compete for the coveted award.
The Texas Challenge Cup dates back to 1986, first held at Texas Corinthian Yacht Club. That year, nine clubs competed on Solings. Lakewood Yacht Club and Houston Yacht Club held the event over the next three years but was not repeated until 2001, when it was resurrected.
By 2005, the event included clubs throughout Texas. Sometime after, the tradition paused again, until now. Lakewood is rekindling this great Texas tradition once again, to be held in their fleet of RS21s on December 11, 2021…

orange peel
From our Fabulous Forums, brought to you by Marlow Ropes.
I want to set my J/111 (so 36 feet LOA with an 8 foot bowsprit) up for asym peels. I have only been sailing this boat since July and it’s my first asym boat, so I would appreciate some help deciding how to set this up and do it.
I think I need a second block on each quarter and a second set of sheets. The bowsprit end is set up with two low friction rings, and both sides of the cabin house have line guides and a clutch. I currently have one tackline on the starboard side. I think the fittings on the port side were for the headsail furler, but I’m getting rid of that…

11th Hour Racing: Lightning strikes again
The 11th Hour Racing Team’s campaign to win The Ocean Race 2022-23 is in need of better luck. Led by American Charlie Enright, it has been one thing or another.
In June, they had multiple collisions and damaged a foil during The Ocean Race Europe. In September, they had to drop out of the Défi Azimut race with a broken steering system.
And now in the Transat Jacques Vabre, a double-handed race from Le Havre, France across the Atlantic to Martinique, their older IMOCA was dismasted while their new IMOCA reports keel damage. Enright provides an update on November 21, 2021:
We’ve been dealing with a lot of breakages throughout the course of this race, such is the nature of a new boat on an action packed and competitive track like this one.
None of these “little incidents” compares to what we went through yesterday. American Magic will enter America’s Cup
While the sound of boots on the ground is not yet deafening, the march toward the 37th America’s Cup has most certainly begun. Following the release of the Protocol and revised AC75 Class rules on November 17, here’s an update from one team that’s ready for the entry period to open December 1:
American Magic, the U.S. Challenger for the 36th America’s Cup [AC36] and a prospective Challenger for the 37th, was pleased to receive the AC37 Protocol and updated AC75 Class Rule as part of a joint release earlier this week from the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, and the Challenger of Record, INEOS Britannia.
Along with the Deed of Gift, the Protocol and Class Rule are the governing documents for the next America’s Cup and provide a framework to allow design and planning work to accelerate for all teams.
“Our team plans to compete at AC37, and as part of that process we continue to learn as much about the next event as we can,” said Doug DeVos, Co-Founder and Team Principal of American Magic. “The racing venue and the regatta dates remain unknown, but the release of the Protocol and the Class Rule is definitely welcome…
