You may recall this little dust up over doublehanded sailors and their place in the Sydney to Hobart race. Read the story and then read below what Hugo van Kretchmar was forced to say. Bummer all the way around.

In November 2020, a Queensland-resident sailor, Mark Hipgrave, posted a video on a website known as Caption Generator, which depicted a scene from a German movie about Hitler. English language captions had been added to the video by Mr. Hipgrave, which had the characters discussing the Sydney to Hobart yacht race and double-handed sailing. The Hitler character was identified by the captions as Matthew Allen AM . The video has subsequently been taken down. Mr. Allen claims that the video defames him, and has commenced defamation proceedings against Mr. Hipgrave over it.

Mr. Hipgrave, who is defending the claim, recently set up a GoFundMe page to seek financial support to assist him to fund his defense of the proceedings. Hugo van Kretschmar, was one of the people who responded to Mr. Hipgrave’s request, and posted some comments on the GoFundMe page, which he also posted on Facebook…

Chicago Mac: Back on track

When entries opened for the 2021 Chicago to Mackinac Race opened in February, the COVID clouds were lingering, but now nearly four months later, Chicago Yacht Club is preparing for full sun in July.

After cancelling the 289nm race last summer due to the pandemic, the 112th edition has been green lighted to start on July 16 for cruising sailboats and July 17 for performance sailboats, with 240+ entrants planning for the course from Chicago’s Navy Pier on Lake Michigan to Mackinac Island, MI on Lake Huron.

“The Chicago Yacht Club is just so pleased to be back on track with this incredible sailing tradition,” said Race Chair Martin Sandoval. “The Race to Mackinac is fresh, exciting, challenging and very different every year.

Sailing The Great Dismal Swamp Canal

Thursday

The historic Dismal Swamp Canal not only runs through acres of primeval forest, but is free of commercial shipping

They said it couldn’t be done, but damn it, we did it! We sailed the Great Dismal Swamp Canal, in light winds, no less. Everyone else just motors. Like many other cruisers, I have also transited the canal twice under power and can tell you from personal experience that none of the people motoring this historic waterway ever really see it. Same thing with those people driving the scenic road that runs alongside. They aren’t really seeing it either.

When you’re going an average of 1.5 to 2 knots, though, by way of sails and sculling oar, you more than see it. You become part of it. So much so, there were times I seriously wondered whether we would ever make it out of there…

On May 23, 1964, Eric Tabarly set sail from Plymouth to participate in the second edition of the English Transat. The rules were simple: to link the United States (Newport) from England in real time. This legendary British sailor hopes to take less than 30 days on the same boat for this edition. This will be without counting on the young Frenchman Eric Tabarly who had a brand new boat built for this edition…

We have a larger version of a tourist boat that does this same sort of shit in San Diego bay. There is no speed limit and it is an accident just waiting to happen…

In the wake of a fatal collision on Southampton Water, the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch is warning high-speed tourboat operators to heed their industry’s voluntary code of conduct and ensure the safety of their passengers.

On August 22, tour boat operator Seadogz Rib Charter Ltd. dispatched the rigid inflatable Seadogz on a routine commercial tour. The boat departed the Ocean Village Marina at about 0945 that morning with 11 passengers on board.

After performing a series of high-speed figure-eights around navigational buoys in the harbor, the skipper headed back up the channel in order to tail an outbound ferry, passing back and forth to jump the larger vessel’s wake. Exiting one of these maneuvers at a speed of about 38 knots, the skipper navigated the RIB into the North-West Netley buoy, a five-tonne steel marker measuring about ten feet in diameter by 15 feet high.

Upon impact, the bow of the boat was tossed upward and all on board were thrown violently forward by the rapid deceleration. Everyone on board (save for one passenger) sustained injuries, including broken limbs, fractured vertebrae, dislocations and a punctured lung. Emily Lewis, a 15-year-old passenger who was sitting just forward of the pilot house, was fatally injured.

After a year like no other, the message from Superyacht Cup Palma 2021 is to the point – it’s time to go racing! The 25th anniversary of Europe’s longest-running superyacht regatta will see action out on the Bay of Palma from June 23-26, with the new-look event acting smartly and adapting itself to local pandemic limitations.

Buoyed by an already promising provisional entry list featuring several stars of the superyacht world, the event now features new racing classes that offer something for all possible competitors. With the determined support of SYC partners, friends, suppliers and collaborators – not least the prestigious Real Club Nautico de Palma which has expanded its long-standing involvement – the organisers are optimistic they can meet the pent-up demand for competitive and enjoyable racing…

Australia will be celebrating the birth of the ILCA Laser dinghy by organizing a world record attempt of 200+ Lasers to sail in a parade from Sydney Opera House to South Head on May 30 to recognize 50 years of the popular sailing class.

Double Bay Sailing Club, which has the largest fleet of active ILCA Laser dinghy sailors in Australia, has invited all Laser sailors from around Sydney and beyond to participate in the exhibition parade, with festivities to follow at Double Bay Sailing Club.

“This is going to be real spectacle, with such a large fleet framed against the iconic backdrop of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House,” said Andrew Cox, Commodore of Double Bay Sailing Club, with the parade led by 13-times World Laser Masters Champion, Brett Beyer, on a commemorative gold-coloured Laser created for the occasion by the Australian ILCA Laser builder, Performance Sailcraft Australia…

Since the class was established in 1971, over 218,000 boats have been sold worldwide, making it one of the most popular sailing classes ever…
